MY EXPERIENCE AS A VOLUNTEER AT BEN TAUB

V O L U N T E E R Orientation.

This is a late update, but on September 20 I attended volunteer orientation for the Harris County Hospital District! I've had prior experience volunteering in a hospital setting, so I figured a volunteer position at Ben Taub would be perfect for me. Although the process for volunteering at Ben Taub is quite lengthy, I am very excited about absorbing and shadowing all I can while I am a volunteer.

Anyway, my orientation at Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital was very informative. A guy named Rich led the lecture, but Liz is my volunteer coordinator at Ben Taub. We learned a variety of helpful info such as rules and regulations of volunteering, patient identifiers, and what a typical volunteering day would be like. The Harris County Hospital District serves the 25% of people in Houston that do not have health insurance. A TB skin test is absolutely required in order to volunteer, as well as the proper uniform with no excessive tattoos and jewelery.

Overall, I am really excited about my experience at Ben Taub! At the time of orientation, I requested if I can have a position that had as much patient contact/interaction as much as possible. I would prefer to not have a simple office job, but Ben Taub does have plenty of volunteers at the moment so all in all I am grateful for any option that have. :)
